This black and white design is probably as stylish and functional as one can imagine. The plates fit all colours and are easy to fit into old, as well as new, environments. The combination of black and white offers maximum contrast, which in turn provides maximum readability. The Highlander design is surprisingly functional and modern. In fact it's history stretches way back, long before the time of functionalism! The design fits well under the Bauhaus doctrine "Form follows function". But unlike the Bauhaus movement, we do not believe that “ornament is a crime”. There are many instances where the ornament in itself has a very essential function.
In the cradle of industrialism in Northern Europe the industrialized production of porcelain enamel signs flourished. From here it spread across most of Europe, and later also to the New World. With the increasing organization of the society followed a growing need for all sorts of signage with prohibitions, commands, names, numbers, directions and warnings. All these signs were mostly done in porcelain enamel because of their extreme hardiness and longevity. The combination of black lettering on white background was the standard for all text signs. Naturally, this is because black and white were the only enamel colours which were available in the early days. But this design surely owes its continued popularity to its functional qualities. To this day, it is preferred for nameplates, door signs, house names and other text signs.
When RAMSIGN in 1991 resumed the manufacture of enamel signs, the Highlander design was our first choice for text signs and nameplates. From the very beginning it was obvious that we had to get the style exactly right. The same could be said about the characteristic ornaments - double frames with black eyes, which were widely used, in particular before 1900. Therefore, we put a lot of preparatory work into identifying the original, over 100 years old, styles and ornaments. These drawings formed the basis for what we today know as the Highlander series. This means, that you can be sure that your RAMSIGN name plate, door sign, street name or house number is manufactured in full accordance with authentic designs and production methods.
In its simplicity and integrity lies probably the beauty of this colour scheme, which is tight and conservative - well - it is tempting to say timeless. Like all other colours, black and white is subject to fashion whims. Times are changing. Black and white is however the fixed point that we always return to. After a period of time where we have been saturated in an abundance of glorious colours, we are drawn towards the classic simplicity and stability that black and white represents.
It is no coincidence, that the symbol of "yin and yang" which deals with the balance in the universe, the world and in ourselves, is depicted in black and white. This concept is the heart of classical Chinese science and philosophy, as well as the primary guide line within Chinese medicine.
