The story about the blue enamel signs is fascinating. The blue enamel signs are the most popular and widely used enamel signs in Europe, and thus a deeply rooted part of our sign tradition. It is also the first enamel signs to gain massive popularity during the industrialization era. Already from the middle of the 1800s the blue colour was widely used across Europe for house numbers and street signs. The signs were just as beautiful as they were functional. One would really think, that the colour choice had to do with aesthetics. But the reason was, that only this colour was available for mass production, in addition to black and white.
The coloured enamel was then, as now, produced by adding a metal oxide as colour pigment. In this case the pigment is chromiumdioxide, producing the amazing deep blue colour, which appears to be rather similar to ultramarine. Blended into the vitreous substance, which enamel is, the colour achieves a high colour depth and clarity. This is presumably the reason for its continued popularity, even after a wealth of "new-fangled" colours have appeared. As an example of something completely new, yet old, take a look at our new Arrowhead Series, which we have successfully launched recently. Here the classic blue colour has been replaced with a nice dark green.
When RAMSIGN in 1991 resumed the manufacture of enamel signs, it felt obvious to reproduce the beautiful blue house numbers as accurately as possible. Prior to "launch" a thorough process of finding the right style was performed. Hundreds of photographs were shot on streets and alleys of house numbers, street signs and nameplates. Measurements were noted, and enamelling techniques studied.
The fact is, that a wide range of enamel works existed across Europe around and before 1900. This is evidenced by the many variations - also in style. But we sat down to draw up an "archetypal" style based on the original house numbers, and this style we still use today. The graphic and physical quality of the products must be 100% in line with the craft of the old days. This is RAMSIGN's basic philosophy. However, unlike in the old days, we only use lead-free enamel in the production. This is to protect the environment.
The concept of blue nameplates, door signs, and name plaques became a reality on request from customers who were looking for a nice sign to match their blue house number. There isn't a long tradition for the blue door signs and name plates, as is the case for the blue house numbers. Originally this type of signs were mostly white with black. But this new innovation did however make sense, we thought. We therefore chose to introduce a limited range of blue name plates. However with the overriding principle, that all enamel signs must comply with our strict requirements: Original style, trim and stencil technique. Ramsign's Metropolitan nameplates, door signs and name plaques is truly faithful to the signs from the turn of the century, with the beautiful blue colour as an innovation.
This was the start of what we today know as the Metropolitan Series. We have received continuous requests from our customers and the range has grown to include new shapes and sizes. We greatly thank our customers for product development which means, that the Metropolitan Series today contains formats for most uses and needs. But if you are looking for something which you do not find, please do not hesitate to send an email to: email@example.com. We are very sympathetic to your wishes.
